Event Overview

We're at it again and we're working some donut magic with a personal favorite - Old Fashioned Glazed Donuts. We'll be making these doughnuts from scratch where students will be taking home both a batch of dough to fry up at home AND prepared donuts they will fry up and glaze in the class. This is a hands-on culinary class where you everyone will learn, make, and of course, eat these delicious pillows of fried dough we prepare.

This class is geared to those who want to learn more about donut making and also have fun topping, glazing and incorporating some flavor combinations. By taking this class, you’ll have some tasty recipes to try out and perhaps be inspired to skip the bakery and make them at home!

Joelen Tan is a Chicago area private caterer and former restaurant chef behind the 'What's Cookin, Chicago?' website. Joelen has been recognized in both local and national media and has worked with celebrity chefs including Rick Bayless, Spike Mendelsohn, and Marcela Valladolid. Since 2007, she has been teaching culinary classes, hosting culinary events in Chicagoland and does recipe development work with major food brands including Sara Lee, Pepperidge Farms, Campbell's, Kraft, Frito Lay and Starbucks to name a few.

    This was an extremely fun class! The teacher was informative and kept things entertaining :)
    The doughnut recipe was not too hard as well, and could me duplicated at home!
    I highly enjoy this class and would recommend it to anyone else.

    I loved learning about stuffing donuts from Joelen. She was clearly knowledgeable and very fun to work with. We had lots of donuts to take home with us. My only complaint was that we wrapped up the 2-hour class in about 90 minutes. Would have loved to learn another donut or method of stuffing in the time we had left!

    Excellent space for any cooking class. Joelen was a great host and teacher and provided us with coffee and teas to go along with our home made treats. I wish that there were more yeast type donuts, but understand that those do take more time than class allows. Interesting introduction to the craft. I am anxiously awaiting the recipe e-mail.

    This is one of the best Dabble classes I've taken, hands down. Informative, delicious, fun, and practical. It was the perfect start to a Saturday.

    This was an awesome class. We learned how to make four different types of breakfast treats and the instructor did a great job of making sure it was hands on and easy to understand. I got to bring a ton of extras home and my friends all enjoyed taste testing them with me!

    This class is both fun and delicious. Joelen is very friendly and warm, you feel like you've gone over to to your friend-the-chef's kitchen rather than an instructional class. We learned how to make 5 different types of doughnuts plus all the toppings. I feel totally confident that I could whip up a batch now!

    When would you make five types of donuts with 5 types of frosting, billions of sprinkle options all in one sitting? Meet new people and do it in a new place? Have someone who's in the know, right there next to you, to ask questions? More reasons to give this a go than you have time to find reasons not to.

    This was my first dabble: a great class and a great experience. Perhaps the bar has been set high, but I can't wait to sign up for another class.

    Great class - the Enerspace location had a fantastic kitchen area that made it easy for everyone to work together and see what was going on with everyone else. That being said, it was quite necessary to see everyone else was doing b/c you're really only making one of the donut style while other class members are making the other donuts, so you really have to be diligent about what's happening with the other recipes if you want to "learn" those ones (as opposed to just seeing the recipe written out later). My partner and I worked on the apple fritters and they were the *best* ones by far (the others were great too, though!). I'd definitely recommend this class - everyone was impressed at my volleyball group where I shared the donuts!
