Event Overview

We're opening up the kitchen for a Mediterranean Taverna cooking party! Come join us in the kitchen as we prepare a delicious spread of Mediterranean inspired eats and wash it down with wine. This is a hands-on culinary class where you will learn, prepare, and of course, eat the themed party menu we prepared.

This class is geared to those who enjoy Greek/Mediterranean cuisine and would like to learn how to prepare a few classic dishes with a twist. We will cover common Greek ingredients, prepare popular dishes with our own spin and enjoy our dinner with wine. By taking this class, you’ll have a greater appreciation of Mediterranean cuisine and pick up some entertaining tips to host your own Mediterranean Taverna Cooking Party this summer or anytime of year!

Mediterranean Taverna Cooking Party Menu:
*This menu can be adapted for those who are gluten free &/or vegetarian*

- Spanakopita / Tyropita - learn how to make these flaky, buttery savory hand pies with phyllo dough
- Greek Tomato & Cucumber Salad - a summer favorite that's fresh and colorful
- Kofta Kebabs - prepare a flavorful marinade with ground meat formed onto skewers along with making tzatziki sauce from scratch!
- Lemon Dill Rice - find out the secret to making rice before we flavor it with fresh lemon and dill
- Baklava - work with more phyllo dough to create this popular dessert layered with nuts and drenched in honey
- BYOB wine

Joelen Tan is a Chicago area private caterer and former restaurant chef behind the 'What's Cookin, Chicago?' website. Joelen has been recognized in both local and national media and has worked with celebrity chefs including Rick Bayless, Spike Mendelsohn, and Marcela Valladolid. Since 2007, she has been teaching culinary classes, hosting culinary events in Chicagoland and does recipe development work with major food brands including Sara Lee, Pepperidge Farms, Campbell's, Kraft, Frito Lay and Starbucks to name a few.

    I want to live in the space Joelen uses for her classes...that is how much I loved this class. A very hands on class, and such a welcoming and attentive instructor. Her passion for gastronome and the culinary world is evident the minute you meet her. Just a clean working space and very organized set up. It’s such a communal environment, that you’ll end up making new friends before the night is over. Joelen looking forward to taking another class. I will be on the lookout if you decide for another tamale making class.

    Joelen is amazing. Great food and atmosphere. Interactive class so you really learn how to make a dish. Highly recommend classes by this instructor.

    Class was fantastic! Joelen created an environment that was relaxed, hands-on, and really well-attended. I like it when an instructor develops a following and people from previous classes come to other events - it's a testament to their consistency. We made excellent food, ate it, and took extras home. The menu was well thought out. Items were easy to prepare, but looked fancy and will impress your friends. Highly recommend!!!
