Event Overview

In this workshop you will learn how to turn an old dress or upcycled piece of fabric into a chic, practical apron. We will work off of a basic pattern that can be modified depending on the size and shape of the garment to be upcycled, with different options to tailor edging and pockets to create a piece that is completely unique.

Prerequisites: Advanced Beginner/ Intermediate sewing ability
You should already be familiar with:
-threading and replacing a bobbin
-beginning and ending lines of stitching
-ironing and sewing hems
-tucking corners to hide exposed edges
-sewing a basic project, such as a pillowcase, independently
(If you are uncertain whether your skill level is sufficient, please send an email to ivannabgreene@gmail.com. If the class size is small, beginners may be welcomed.)

Required materials:
-A large piece of fabric or garment to upcycle. My favorites are large dresses and curtain panels. Ideal fabric is heavy cotton, linen, or blends, NOT jersey or anything with stretch or transparency. I recommend trying one of the two Goodwill outlet stores in Denver where everything is sold by the pound for a VERY good price.

If not sold there, all fabric is sent to the landfill or a textile recycler. I will have some recycled garments and fabric available for an extra $5 fee if you are unable to find something ahead of time, but color choice is not guaranteed. Please email me if you would like to purchase fabric on-site.

-Lace or other edging, if desired. Can be in the form of strips or doilies for tops of pockets. Try the house wears section of your favorite thrift store.

-Contrasting pocket fabric, if desired.

If time permits, we will also discuss other ways of repurposing clothing and reducing our impact in the textile industry, which is the 2nd most polluting industry.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

I have a mission! I want to bring people together to create, and grow a collective of curious creatives and artists in arms who wish to share their passion for making and hand crafting beautiful things for the pure joy of it.

Just this December, a dream came true for me. I now have a space to call home for all of my passions. It's a boutique fabric nook and makerspace in RiNo, where I host all my classes, sell amazing modern fabric, beads, and jewelry. Come see us at 3327 Brighton Blvd. Denver, CO 80216. (Hours are posted on the website.)

As far as my creativity philosophy goes, I believe all art comes from the soul, the architect, and the hands and eyes are the builders for those inspired ideas. When we make I get lost in the process and drop all judgements and lock away the inner critic, allowing myself to simply play. Altogether, I am a fabric, quilt, music, bead and jewelry enthusiast, but I want to gather makers of all arts to inspire, support each other, and share. I'd love to build a creative community, and bring together others who have a passion for making things. I also sing, play a few instruments, and write inspiring songs with my darling songstress sisters, the Leaders of the Heart and Starling, in Denver and Boulder. I hope to join forces in creative bliss.
