Event Overview

Now you can try wheel throwing without paying $400 for a 10 week class!

We will go over the basics of learning about the different kinds of clay, wedging, centering and pulling a small cylinder on the wheel. We will be using a real high fire stoneware, which requires careful drying and cannot be fired right away like pretend clay! For most people just learning to center can be difficult, but you will have help and we make sure you complete at least one cylinder. You can choose your best if you complete more than one and we will trim the extra clay from it after it dries sufficiently and fire it for you with a glaze you pick. You can come back to pick it up about 3 weeks after the class.

No prerequisite except a sense of humor and willingness to get dirty.

Veva has a BA in art and in English literature from NEIU and has been making, showing and selling ceramics for 30 years and jewelry for 10 years. She makes all kinds of ceramics from the size of espresso cups to 3 foot tall garden sculptures. She has taught classes for both children and adults. She owns and operates OMG! it's full of stars! studio and gallery in West Roger's park in Chicago, the newest and most friendly Chicago art-space.

This class is great! Veva is very knowledgeable about pottery and instructs in a very laid back style. She was a great help for my group who had absolutely no experience with the wheel before. You get tons of time to make multiple projects and play around with forming the clay in different way! Definitely a good intro class!

Great class! Throwing a pot on a potter's wheel wasn't as hard as I thought it would be! I was able to finish class having made two admittedly simple (and maybe a little bit lopsided) bowls, which was more than I thought I'd be able to do in a beginners class. The second bowl is an extra $5.

Great class. Veva was a perfect teacher she walked us through each step and then let us take our helm at the wheel helping out when we need her to. Class size was perfect, I'm looking forward to going back again soon.

I have always wanted to take a class in using the wheel, but couldn't find space to make a commitment, so this class was the perfect opportunity to see if it was something I liked. Veva was a great teacher in that she gave me the basics of what I needed to be successful and also let me explore the wheel on my own. Her studio has a very calm, clean and pleasant atmosphere. I would definitely take the class again.

We thoroughly enjoyed this class! Veva is a fantastic teacher and did a good job sharing her knowledge with us. Regardless of your skill level, you will leave with a decent piece of art. We had a lot of fun and can't wait to take more classes with Veva! :)

What a great experience. The laid back approach & environment was great. Lots of encouragement was provided. It's something I'd love to do again, and would definitely recommend. Also the location is easy to get to. It's not far from public transportation, is on a bike route, and also has plenty of street parking.
