Event Overview

"We are a continuum. Just as we reach back to our ancestors for our fundamental values, so we, as guardians of that legacy, must reach ahead to our children and their children. And we do so with a sense of sacredness in that reaching." --Paul Tsongas

You are a human being with beautiful, genuine, and complex thoughts and feelings. You may have lived 19 years or 99 years, but you have lived--vibrantly. If you died today, what legacy would you leave behind? Material possessions? Property? A mountain of unpaid student debt? All of that pales in comparison to story, for in the final accounting, objects are as fleeting as life itself. You will not be remembered for the things you had, but for the actions you took, the wisdom you shared, and the love you gave away.

Writing your story today means that future generations won't have to wonder about who you were, or what life was like in 'the olden days.' It's hard to imagine it now, but very soon, 2017 will be but a moment in history. Its politics, its consumer habits, its technology, and its customs will be dissected by sociologists, studied by students, and marveled at by children who can't imagine a day when teleportation hadn't yet been invented. You can record the present moment, and in so doing, literally re-write history. [Not a white male? Then it's finally your turn! Though-- white males, we love you and would love to have you in class, too.]

This three-hour workshop will teach you to:

  • understand the difference between a memoir and an autobiography

  • appreciate contemporary examples of legacy writing

  • visually map your life's timeline

  • chart your life as a series of actions and obstacles

  • begin writing your life story

  • hold yourself accountable to writing

  • self-publish your story

Jess will provide OJ, snacks, and all the materials to map and begin writing your life story! If you put it off for 'someday,' it may not get done. So let's do it already! (And have fun!)

This was one of the most amazing classes I have taken. Jess is an amazing instructor and does a wonderful job of setting up the class so that it's a perfect blend of instructional and interactive. She led us through many details about creating a memoir (styles, genres) and then allowed us time with writing exercises that helped us to start our own story. We also shared and were provided feedback by fellow students. The class itself was actually very therapeutic (I had no idea!) and a great creative outlet to start outlining our very personal stories. The group of students were also wildly impressive and I can't wait to read their future books.
I also appreciated how Jess gave insights on how to publish your book once you write it. That was very helpful and information that I had no idea about. The idea of writing a memoir is a lot less daunting now and she gives you a clear path to start yours. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this teacher and class! Thank you!
