Event Overview

Some are familiar with Vietnamese fresh Spring Rolls, Some are familiar with Summer Rolls?What do you call these things anyway? What is the difference between the two anyway? Well, one is fried (Spring) and the other is called Goi Guon in Vietnamese. The literal translation is Salad (Goi) Roll (Guon). Most restaurants serve salad rolls with Nuoc Cham, a fish sauce based dipping sauce, with a spicy peanut Hoisin sauce. We will learn to make BOTH types in this hands on class!

Chef Donna Binbek, proprietor of Simply Food Chicago Personal Chef and Catering, located in the Hyde Park area of Chicago, welcomes you and your family and friends to come out and celebrate the beginning of Spring by making these easy to prepare rolls for your dining pleasure. These rolls are traditionally made with Shrimp, but if you prefer, you can simply omit the shrimp in your roll when you make them.

6:00 p.m. – Welcome with Wine
6:30 p.m. – Demonstration Starts
7:00- 8:00 p.m. – Make spring rolls to take home

We will start the evening with a Welcome with Wine (BYOB to share). Please bring something light and refreshing to SHARE; cold sake, a light white wine or a light beer will be perfect! After that, Chef Donna will demonstrate how to make the rolls, and the two dipping sauces, and then you will be on your own (with help of course!) to prepare rolls to take home that evening.

Prerequisites

The cost includes ingredients, recipes and wine suggestions to take home. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN STORAGE CONTAINERS FOR TAKE HOME and serving plates in the spirit of sustainable dining. All of the vegetables for the spring rolls themselves are organic.

Please note: The Spring Rolls, Spicy Peanut sauce and the Nuoc Cham contain ingredients that some guests might have allergic reactions to. Please use caution when preparing those items for yourself and family members.

Donna Binbek is the Chef/Owner of Simply Food Chicago Personal Chef Service. Her love of food and cooking began as a teen; assisting her father in the kitchen of his taco stand & candy store businesses and helping her mother plan parties for family and friends. Many years later, after working in the corporate world, and starting her own family; the culinary bug bit once again so Donna enrolled and trained at Chicago's Kendall College of Culinary Arts, and she started her Hospitality career as a Garde Manger then quickly moving up to line cook at the famous Gordon's Restaurant in downtown Chicago. Following her stint at Gordon's, Donna realized she wanted to go in business for herself and cook the cuisine she wanted and loved to make, so she started her own catering and personal chef service. Now, she happily prepares the foods she loves for clients, family and friends, and also gives cooking instruction and assists in wine consultations. Though her first love will always be cooking and hospitality, Donna enjoys being behind the scene, photographing food, wine and social events when working with her lifestyle photography company, Donna Binbek Photography.

    The location was a little hard to find but it was an amazing class. It was intimate, all the people were super cool, and best of all there were plenty of ingredients for us to make rolls with! Teacher was great, I hope she does more!
