I was raised in Northwest Indiana where some of the most beautiful landscapes abruptly end at the fences of giant industrial complexes. Urban landscapes that once thrived are now in a tailspin of economic and environmental disaster. Having been raised in that area, it seemed normal for beautiful sandy beaches to be interrupted by hazardous area signs, and gorgeous sunsets to have a smoke stack in silhouette with them. These scenes of my youth have imbedded themselves in my subconscious and have led me down a unique path of artistic exploration. I find it fascinating to incorporate hard industrial elements in works that address nature, or the human presence and form. In some of my work I have even played with the conundrum I find myself in considering the use of electricity generated locally, that I then consume to create work that generally is addressing the negativity of the system. The thought complexity, and conviction I put into my work is all directly connected with a guilt I feel as a postindustrial human.
My education started after enrolling at the American Academy of Art. This led me to my mentor and good friend Bobby Joe Scribner. A professor at the academy and a free-lance sculptor, Bobby Joe introduced me to the world of steel sculpture. It was the perfect medium for a young man like myself to use to express my complicated emotions surrounding Industry and Nature. Working with Bobby Joe turned into an Apprenticeship lasting nearly three years. Next I found myself working toward structural welding certificates. The last step in my undergraduate studies was returning to academia at Ball State University. This small State school in East Central Indiana boasts one of the finest sculpture/3D facilities in the Midwest. I spent two years in attendance here making some of the most powerful works of my career thus far, with a thesis containing all the research and evidence necessary to back up the series.
I now find myself residing in Denver Colorado. Here I am assembling a shop and studio to continue my personal work as well as offer my fabrication services to the public via commissioned work as well as open studio space and classes to those interested in learning to do the work themselves.

Also probably very useful for anyone with a welding project in mind as Chad is very willing to help (and totally cool about managing the $$ outlay.)

The class was relaxed and a lot of fun. Chad first demonstrated what we would be doing. Then when it was your turn at the anvil, he was good about jumping in to help if you needed it or hanging back and letting you have at it if that was more your style. Each person individually makes their own item so you do spend a lot of time watching and chatting with others in the class. We had a great group so the time went by quickly and Chad did a great job of encouraging conversation and making everyone feel welcome. I also never felt rushed to finish up, even though we went over the designated end time, nobody was pressured to speed up. The last person got as much time as the first. Blacksmithing is probably not a hobby I would pursue but twisting and pounding steel was a great experience and something I'm definitely glad I tried.

Each student took a turn emulating the weld bead until they got the hang of it. Chad clearly enjoys sharing his craft and is able to make it so it is not too intimidating. We were able to create a small project by the end of the class. Great class!

Wonderful experience, signed up for the advanced class immediately.

Highly recommended for anyone new to or interested in welding. All the specialized safety equipment is provided, but read and obey the dress code. And if you have small hands, I suggest bringing a pair of sturdy leather gloves that fit well.

Not only does he go over safety, but he gives a brief history of the craft and explains some of the geeky details. The project will give you a few techniques to practice and send you home with a useful item. (We made bottle openers in the class I took). This class is a good ol' hammer swingin' time.

He seems to really enjoy teaching and sharing his studio with his students. I was pretty nervous going into the class (I don't have much experience working with any tools more complex than a hammer), but Chad took the time to explain how everything worked and put me at ease. Everyone in the class seemed to thoroughly enjoy the experience and we all made some awesome ornaments! I'll definitely be back for more classes at C-Squared Studios.

Once you walk into the shop and see it, you can already feel that the class will be a great experience--and it was! It started with the history and science of welding so we would know when, how, and why. Each type of welding has a historical and practical application. The context of the process and tools made it easier for me to relate to the practical instructions. Chad did an excellent job of teaching the group of us how to MIG weld. Nobody in the group felt unsafe or exited the class without welding something. Prior to the class I did not know anything and now I am excited to start practicing.

Great class. The instructor was knowledgeable, professional and very personable. It was a small class so each of us had 1-on-1 instruction. We started out with a safety briefing (presented well with some critical information) then moved onto some welding demonstrations and finally onto our being able to do some welding on our own. Fun stuff in a funky cool location.

Felt a tad intimidated at first, but once the instructors started talking about safety it was obvious they were going to great. They both did a great job explaining all things welding and were very helpful during our practice sessions using a MIG welder. I came home with a necklace holder I made from scraps around the shop with some help from Chad. I am so proud of myself! I was taking the class as it was something I always wanted to try and I loved it. My neighbors and friends are now calling me "Flashdance" Ha! Thanks guys!

Also great to know the class space is open to the public and I can return any time to use the equipment to work on my own projects.

I would definitely recommend this class for those who are looking for a quick and dirty run down of different ways to connect and cut metal.

Chad and Jack did an excellent job of getting those of us with no welding experience caught up on the basics (the history, how the tools work, technique, etc) . I liked that the class covered several different types of welding, which helped me to better decide which type I want to start practicing with first! IF they decide to offer more classes I would certainly sign up.
