Argaman&Defiance

Argaman&Defiance creates 100% silk scarves naturally dyed by hand in our studio located in St. Charles, Mo. We use natural dye extracts responsibly collected from tree bark, roots, and leaves. We then hand paint or print a unique design on each piece.

From stitch to surface design, Argaman&Defiance is creating every piece by hand.

Lydia Crespo attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) graduating in 2010. She received the James Nelson Raymond Fellowship from SAIC upon graduation. Crespo used the funds from the fellowship to start her business, Argaman&Defiance.

In 2018, Argaman&Defiance studio moved to the Foundry Art Centre located in St. Charles, MO.

Argaman&Defiance collection is available in over 50 boutiques throughout the US. A&D has designed for Urban Outfitters, West Elm, Target, and Huckberry.

Crespo has featured on NBC Morning Chicago, WGN's Around Town Chicago, and Craft Room Crash speaking about her collection. Most recently Argaman&Defiance was highlighted in Chicago Magazine “Best of Chicago”, Chicago Tribune “16 Things We Love”, and marthastewart.com. Listen to Crespo on S2 Episode 11 and S3 Episode 1 of the Go Forth Podcast, and Episode 3 of the Creative Living Podcast.

In her spare time, Crespo created and leads workshops on craft, process, and composition. Stay curious and check out a workshop!

I wanted to try weaving and was glad to take this class with Lydia as she is a great teacher!
I had fun chatting with my classmates. And I was able to take home the completed project.
I look forward to taking more classes like this with Lydia!

My mom, my sister, and I attended this class as an early Mother's Day present for our mom. We ended up being the only 3 to sign up and we were treated to a private class with Lydia! We had an absolute blast listening to Lydia as she explained her process and the different types of natural dyes that she uses. She also shared about the projects that she has done in the past as well as those currently in the works. Her passion for what she does is truly apparent! We got to make 1 naturally dyed towel each and then, as an added bonus, ended up getting to play around with tie-dying. Lydia was very accommodating and helpful throughout the evening, assisting us as we went and allowing us to take our time. She is so personable, engaging, and a great teacher. I can't speak highly enough about the personal and unique experience that my mom, sister, and I were treated to during this Dabble class. I'd highly recommend it!

I brought my 13-year-old match from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Chicago with me for this class and she loved it. Lydia was super fun and warm, and the project was simple but not dull. Perfect for a low-key outing where you can take home a finished project.

Very relaxed fun class if you are looking to try something new. I would highly recommend signing up with some friends. I attended with three friends and there was plenty of time to chat with our wine while we waited for our cloths to dye.
