Event Overview

Intro to Woodturning with Chris Hoehle!

Woodturning is a specialized form of woodworking in which the lathe spins blocks or rounds of wood at high rates of speed while the woodworker cuts it using various hand-held gouges and chisels, to create round forms much like a ceramist throwing pottery on a wheel. It offers the craftsperson an endless amount of creative possibilities, and a joyful, improvisational immediacy- projects can be finished in a matter of hours (or even minutes), not days or weeks!

In fact, during class time, you'll have the opportunity to complete one or two beginner projects- a French-style rolling pin and a small vase for holding dry flowers. In addition, as an added value, you'll receive one additional free project hardware kit for either a wine bottle stopper or a bottle opener. The process for completing the bottle opener or bottle stopper project kit will be discussed, but you likely will not have time to complete one during class so we'll also give you a free hour of open shop time to come back after class and finish up or continue building your woodturning skills! (Chris is available to help you during Thursday night open shop hours and sometimes on Saturday and Sunday). All materials for the class projects, including wood, sandpaper, finishing supplies, tools and safety equipment are included in the cost of the class.

This class is taught by local professional woodturner and DTL shop monitor Chris Hoehle. He has been turning wood for over thirteen years and has studied with many of the top professional woodturners in the field today at some of the best craft schools in the country such as Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Tennessee. He remembers what it was like to be a beginner though, and he's eager to share his knowledge and experience with you and help you get a good start in this exciting craft! You can check out Chris's work on his website, www.studiocsh.com, or on instagram, @studiocsh. Here's a quick video of Chris turning a carver's mallet to give you an example of what you might be doing in this class: https://www.instagram.com/p/BU1lZrdj44L/

No prior woodworking experience is necessary- while beginning woodturners often do have experience doing other woodworking projects, it is possible to start your woodworking journey at the lathe and this class will be taught with a focus on the complete beginner!

We'll take a one hour break for lunch, so bring your own snacks or explore some of the nearby options on Santa Fe!
