Story Telling for Everyday Life

Event Overview

This is a class about telling compelling stories in general. For this class, I want to start with a workshop where I tell a few example stories, give some pointers from these examples about effective storytelling, and then class members share stories. Together we will work through how to be effective and engaging in storytelling, especially without the aid of powerpoint or other high-tech visuals.  It is a worthwhile exercise to learn to use one's voice, face, and body as the most effective visuals, with other visuals as support rather than the dominant feature. My aim is to use this class as a springboard for more specific workshops related to storytelling in business or for other specific audiences. Thank you for your consideration!

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

Hello. I am an applied anthropologist with an eclectic background. In addition to earning a PhD in applied anthropology, I've been a US Marine, a small business owner, a health scientist, and a garden-variety prole (see Orwell's 1984 for that reference) with hand-memory experience of pickaxes, moving dollies, reach trucks, and other equipment used to do hard work for far too little money. The unifying theme of all these experiences is being open to the world as you find it, being highly adaptable, and learning how to tell the story of each thing and how it fits into the whole. I have college level teaching experience as an instructor in anthropology. I'm on dabble to take the opportunity to teach something about the way I've learned to see the world, how to help communities, and how to tell the story.
