Event Overview

Interested in raising chickens and just aren't sure where to get started? This is the workshop for you - learn everything you need to know to get started on your backyard chicken adventure!

Come to the FOOD ROOF Farm to meet our fine feathered friends and learn more about how satisfying it can be to raise your own chickens and the very important role they play in creating a complete ecosystem for your garden. Learn from the local experts, The Easy Chicken, and leave with the knowledge and confidence to start raising your own!

About the Educators:
After getting their own backyard chickens and devouring chicken books and websites, Seth and Maria Jansen, along with their four young boys, fell in love with these productive, entertaining and ecological creatures. An idea sprouted, and they decided to start a family business, The Easy Chicken, to make backyard chickens more accessible and affordable for others who lead busy lives.

Learn for a Cause:
All proceeds support the nonprofit Urban Harvest STL and their FOOD ROOF Farm project where they grow healthy, organic food for underserved communities in St Louis.

Urban Harvest STL empowers communities to cultivate equitable access to healthy, sustainably grown food and enhance biodiversity in cities. We envision vibrant cities where under-utilized spaces are transformed into productive urban farms which restore natural ecosystems and engage people of all ages to create stronger, more nourishing bonds with each other - and with nature.

We built the first rooftop farm in the St Louis, the FOOD ROOF Farm, atop a building downtown. The FOOD ROOF Farm is a unique, innovative project and a platform for urban agriculture and sustainable design. This project serves as a catalyst to improve overall health and well-being of our community.

This was fabulous. I have been reading books and talking to people about my plans to have backyard chickens when I retire in the next couple of years and jumped at the chance to learn from someone who has experience with them.. The teacher was great. This was also my first time at any Urban Harvest event and I love the Roof Top Farm. Mary was really welcoming and nice. What a great thing she started!

The class was very informative. I would recommend it to anyone considering getting chickens. Being able to get personal advice was a huge help in making the decision to move forward on getting our flock started!
