Event Overview

In this class we will learn the basics of wool applique, including simple embroidery and working with wool felt.  Students will make a stitched ornament based on alebrijes (spirit guides depicted in Mexican folk art as brightly colored sculptures of fantastical creatures.) The bright colors and intense patterns of alebrijes make these felt versions a lot of fun to embroider, using colorful thread, beads and sequins.  There are two patterns from which to choose and you will be provided materials to make one ornament.

Bio for Instructor Becky Edwards:

An extension of my enthusiasm for craft is to share knowledge and skills through teaching.  I teach individuals and small groups (of all ages) how to knit and crochet, as well as stitching penny rugs and wool applique.

As a child, my parents’ store had a weaver on staff who demonstrated tapestry making to visitors. I loved watching them work, figuring out how the complex patterns were made and climbing all over the loom when it wasn’t in use.  Crafts were my very favorite thing to do – I loved learning how things were made and giving it a try myself – and in my world handmade things were always the best things.
As an adult, I continue to try making everything!  I’ve had the opportunity to mold glass, throw clay, weave baskets, create soap, carve wood, knot lace, fold paper and more.  Textiles, though, are always the media to which I return, particularly wool.  With wool, I knit, crochet, weave, and sew, allowing me to experience the meditative effects of hand work while making beautiful things.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

Project Creativity is a new series of craft and art-making classes offered by the Sheldon Art Galleries, designed to help you discover your creative abilities! This summer, we offer our first set of classes, teaching the art of flower origami and pinhole camera-making. A cash bar and light snacks will be available. Bring friends and make it an evening of fun, cocktails and creative crafting!

The not-for-profit Sheldon Art Galleries exhibits works by local, national and international artists in all media. Over 6,000 square feet of the galleries’ spaces on the 2nd floor are permanently devoted to rotating exhibits of photography, architecture, music art and history and children’s art. A sculpture garden, seen from both the atrium lobby and the connecting glass bridge, features periodic rotations and installations, and the Nancy Spirtas Kranzberg Gallery on the lower level features art of all media. The Sheldon actively supports the work of St. Louis artists in all mediums and features a dedicated gallery with museum-quality exhibits by St. Louis artists, past and present.
