MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

About me:
My name is Selas Kidane, I’m the founder of www.diversitycooking.com & active volunteer African Heritage & Health Ambassador. I’m a community outreach healthy & wellness, culinary educator. I’m originally from East Africa, Eritrea, which is very diverse country with collective cultural heritage & historic commonalities with the traditions of Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia, and Djibouti; Eritrea also has some ties with those of the Middle East and Italy. Eritrean traditional diets are similar to or combinations of what you would find in Ethiopian and Sudan and Middle East and some Italians.

My education & career background:
I went to Forest Park St Louis community college, where I graduated in 2005 with associate degree in accounting. I work full time in accounting as A/R analyst. I’m very passionate healthy diet developer & healthy eating/food justice advocate. I enjoy teaching health & wellness in community outreach centers in low income communities, including basic nutrition lessons, hands on healthy cooking techniques & culinary history associated with each recipes origin to connect & help people learn about other cultures.

Why I’m so passionate about promoting healthy living:
I believe the creator places certain passion in our heart and takes us places for a good reason. I feel fortunate to inherit a rich culinary legacy that sustained the health of my family & helped me maintain healthy lifestyle. Therefore, I believe everyone deserves to live healthy life & be served with human dignity. I believe in empowering the less fortunate. So I use my passion for food art to promote healthy living & cultural harmony to honor the kindness & creativities of my parents & grandparents, who inspired my curiosity food art & taught me to think beyond myself.

Why I believe Food & Culture matters?
What makes some cultural diet healthier than others depends on how we flavor our food. I came from a diverse culture where people eat mostly plant based wholesome food flavored with spices and herbs, which promote health & prevent many chronic illnesses. In addition, I have lived within different cultures & travel in different countries. Throughout my journey, I learned that cultural backgrounds influence our eating habit, which affects our physical & mental health.

On the other hand, western diets are loaded with white sugar, salt & unhealthy fats, which are the main cause of obesity, type 2 diabetes cancer, bad cholesterol, high blood pressure & depression. Therefore, I took my curiosity nature to the next level & I spent over 15 years researching & identifying healthy ingredients from different cultures & started recreating my family recipes by modifying the cooking techniques to reduce preparation time.

In addition, I believe introduction to new flavor is the best way to encourage people learn about different cultures, which is a sure way to eliminate cultural misunderstanding & promote peace & harmony in our society. Therefore, I develop recipes that are the reflections of the collective cultural heritage of Eritrean traditional diets & beyond. My mission is to promote healthy living through the art of food & culture.
