Intro to Fermentation and Winemaking Styles: Taste 10 Wines with a Sommelier

ABOUT THIS EVENT

Event Overview

What is fermentation and how does it work? Why are there different types of fermentation to make wine? Can I taste them? (Yes!)

We will answer all these questions and more! Get ready to taste 10 wines that are each made in a unique fermentation style. This class is all about what happens in the winery, and why changing fermentation changes the way that your wine tastes. This will be a fun class for anyone interested in the behind the scenes parts of the wine industry.

The 10 unique wines we will taste are the following styles:

sparkling

semi sparkling

rose

red

carbonic maceration

dried berries

fortified wine

maderized

flor yeast

botrytis

Who should take this class:

Any budding wine enthusiast, ages 21 to 101. No previous wine knowledge necessary.

Why take this class?

It's fun and pressure-free, and I will guide you through tasting 10 wines side by side. You will gain insight into how your taste buds work and how wine is made. We will talk about the myths and truths of the wine industry. You'll leave feeling excited about your wine knowledge!

How to prepare:

Come ready to learn and ready to have a fun time. Please refrain from wearing heavy perfumes or colognes (it will be hard to smell the wines). Please do not chew gum or brush your teeth immediately before the tasting, or the wine will taste really weird (trust me).

I suggest that you have some lunch prior to the class. I'll provide light crackers and cheese for palate cleansing between wines.

Please enjoy wine tasting responsibly. If you look under 30, make sure you have your ID. Do not drink and drive.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

My name is Floreana and I am a sommelier. I love working in the wine industry. I started liking wine in 2007 because my roommate was a sommelier. I have worked in nearly every corner of the wine industry: LA's top fine dining restaurants, farming in a biodynamic vineyard, making wine in a winery, selling wine as a rep, and pouring from behind a bar. I have Level 2 certificates (there are 4 levels total) from the Court of Master Sommeliers and also from the Wine and Spirits Educational Trust. I love teaching people about wine. I am a native Angeleno and I can't wait to teach you, too!
