Event Overview

This class will introduce a new student to the forge and the process of knife making.

Each student will be provided with:

  • Reading material echoing the concepts discussed in class as well as diving deeper into the chemical processes of heat treatment

  • Safety equipment - Hearing protection, Safty glasses, gloves (for use when forging)

  • Enough material W2 High Carbon Tool Steel to produce a Kiridashi of their very own. This is a traditional simple knife design that is very useful and very easy to maintain. Its simple design allows for a lot of artistic expression. We suggest searching for Kiridashin on Pinterest for inspiration

Each student will be expected to wear long pants and long shirts of natural fibers. Synthetic fibers melt from sparks, and can cause burns. Natural fibers do not usually cause problems, but may leave class with new holes.

Class 1: Planning & Techiques

  • Discuss the plan for making the knife

  • Discuss the tools - The Forge, the hammer, and the anvil

  • Discuss the techniques used to move metal and practice first with clay, then with heated steel

  • Make the knife

Class 2: Continue Making the Knife

  • Knife making takes time, and more class time is provided for that reason. In our experience, a begining student will need at least two class times working at the forge and anvil.

Preparatory work done by the instrutor between classes

  • Knives will be full process annealed (24 hour process, not feasible to do in class. The process will be discussed in class

  • Knives will be normalized
