Event Overview

Learn the techniques, artistry, and safety precautions of basic metalworking. This 4 hour class will go over proper usage of personal protective equipment and shop safety, usage of the most common tools used in welding and metal fabrication, and allow time for a creative process.

Dabblers will learn to use a MIG welder, Miter saw, angle grinder, and bench grinder. Class will be a combination of lecture, hands on practice, and work time.

What is MIG?

MIG (GMAW) welders use a spool of metal wire, fed through a gun with a trigger. Upon pressing the trigger, the wire comes out of the tip of the gun (kind of like a hot glue gun). The steel wire arcs on the surface of two steel parts to be joined, instantly melting. This creates a pool of liquid metal which melts the surrounding steel, bonding the two pieces together.

What tools and techniques will be discussed?

Welding safety equipment such as jackets, gloves, goggles, welding hoods, respirators, etc.
Correct setup, adjustment and operation of the MIG welder .
Measuring, marking, and cutting steel with a metal cutoff saw.
Using an angle grinder and other tools and materials to prep the surface

Students are expected to wear Cotton, Denim, or Leather clothing. Long Sleeve shirts and long pants are a must. Closed toes shoes, preferably boots.

Optional apparel also includes: Bandana, Baseball cap,

RESTRICTED APPAREL: Synthetic materials, Hairspray, Loose clothing

Justin is friendly, personable, and and interesting in your learning. Clearly has experience with welding and teaching. Class is about 15 minutes of classroom/chalkboard time before you quickly start getting your hands dirty. Expect to learn how to use an angle grinder, MIG welder, metal band saw, and stationary grinder (forgot the name).

I know almost nothing about welding, and wanted to find a way to get a brief introduction to learn what kinds of jobs can be done, what kind of equipment is needed, and get some hands-on experience. The class was interesting, well-run, and exactly what I was looking for. There were only four students in the class which means that there was enough equipment for everyone, and plenty of personal interaction with instructor.

I purchased this class as a gift for my husband and he loved it! He said he learned a lot new ways he can use his power tools to work with metal and I was thrilled to see his finished welding project which was a small corner table. It's a great class to gift for someone who's shown an interest in welding!

I loved the class. Justin's feedback was informative and helpful. He took time to teach and then let us practice. In the end we got to leave with a great completed project!

This was a great intro to welding. Justin was very friendly and knowledgeable. I'm looking forward to returning to this welding shop again when there is improved equipment.

I have to admit that I was not very good at welding, and that it will take practice to improve, but it was a good introduction. Justine was easy going and helpful and we each were able to make a little table to take home.

Zero welding experience before the class, I now feel I could safely and effectively weld on my own. Teacher is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.
